Instead, the story is the same one over and over: the AC ran all summer, the family noticed a musty smell in a closet or bathroom, and by the time they investigated, mold had colonized behind baseboards, on interior sides of exterior walls, or across the drywall behind furniture pushed against a wall.

Why 'Just Wipe It With Bleach' Isn't a Fix

On porous or semi-porous surfaces — drywall, wood framing, grout, insulation — bleach kills the visible mold on the surface but leaves the hyphae (the root-like structures) embedded in the material. - Buy a $15 hygrometer and place it in your most humid room — target 45% relative humidity indoors
- Run bathroom exhaust fans for 20 minutes after every shower (not just during)
- Never leave laundry piled damp, and vent your dryer directly outside — not into a garage or attic
- Pull furniture 2–3 inches off exterior walls and open closet doors periodically to let air circulate against cold surfaces
If your indoor hygrometer is regularly reading above 55%, the AC alone isn't handling the moisture load. A whole-home dehumidifier tied into the return-air trunk is a one-time investment that keeps DFW summer humidity in the safe zone regardless of what the AC is doing.
When Humidity Mold Has Already Colonized
If mold has established across more than about 10 square feet of a surface, or if it's on porous materials like drywall or wood framing, the correct path is professional mold remediation — containment, negative-air machines with HEPA filtration, removal of affected porous materials, HEPA vacuuming of adjacent surfaces, and post-remediation verification testing.
